Tattoos are the most common form of body art used around the globe. It has been the case for thousands of years and tattoos are often a form of self-expression. For some they mean a lot while others often end up getting them just for some fun.
It is not uncommon for people to have a change of heart and they want to get rid of the ink on their skin. The procedures in yesteryear was extremely excruciating and painful forcing people to not opt for them. However, with the arrival of the laser tattoo removal, the treatment has become easy and largely pain free.
Traditional Tattoo Removal Techniques
Dermabrasion is one of the techniques used to get rid of unwanted tattoos. It is highly invasive and has a fair bit of downtime. It works by exfoliating the skin where the tattoo is made with the help of a specialized wire brush. The new skin eventually is tattoo free but the process is pretty painful.
Salabrasion uses salt, an invasive wooden block and water. The wooden block is wrapped in a gauze and used on the tattoo to scrub it. Salt water is also used. The procedure can take a few days to remove the tattooed skin and can be quite painful.
Cryosurgery involved freezing the skin where the tattoo is and taking it down when the skin has been damaged with the extremely low temperature. There are numerous freezing agents and techniques are used in the process.
Excision is the process of cutting out the skin from the area where the tattoo has been made. This is a highly invasive procedure and the risk of scarring and infections is quite real.
Laser Tattoo Removal
Like many other fields of skincare, laser works quite well for tattoo removal too. It can easily remove all kinds of tattoo with success. We shall learn more about the procedure in the following lines.
How does it Work?
The procedure is quite simple. Laser breaks down the pigmentation in the tattoo into smaller bits to allow the immune system in the body to remove the color on its own. The ink is a foreign body and the immune system gets to work as soon as the tattoo is made. This is the reason why tattoos tend to lose their sharpness over time. They are, however, too big for the immune system to take the entire tattoo down on its own and laser helps in this regard.
Is the same Laser used for all Tattoos?
The lasers used for different tattoos vary. Darker colors like black and blue are the easiest to get rid of and specific lasers are used for them. On the other hand, colors like red and yellow are the hardest to remove and need different setting on the laser.
Is it Painful?
The treatment does have some pain but it is far less that that experienced with other treatment options. To numb down sensations of discomfort, topical anesthetics are applied prior to the treatment which work quite well. Cool air may also be blown during the treatment to further make it comfortable. The most pain felt during the treatment is similar to that of a light rubber band snapping against the skin.
How Many Sessions are needed?
The exact number of sessions needed to get rid of a tattoo depends upon the colors used and the design as well as the size of the tattoo. An older tattoo takes lesser effort to be removed since the ink is already fading. The colors also play a part in the number of sessions needed. Lastly how well the job was originally done has a lot of say in the process. It is a lot easier to get rid of a tattoo done professionally in comparison with a sloppy amateur job.
How good are the Results?
The results are fantastic and in most cases, the tattoo can be entirely removed. It is important to undergo all the required sessions of tattoo removal to achieve the desired outcome. Once done, you can enjoy normal ink free skin without any signs of the tattoo that was once there.
Side Effects and Downtime
The side effects are generally mild and limited to itching, redness and swelling in the treated area. In some rare cases, bruising may take place as well. Photosensitivity will develop and it is important to avoid the sun during the peak hours. While going out during the day, it is important to wear a large floppy hat and apply sunscreen with a high SPF.
There is normally no downtime with the treatment though it is not a bad idea to rest for a day or two after the session. Some routine work may be restricted for a day or two by the doctor in some cases.
